New $5 error - Part Deux

Allegedly this error involves missing letters in the federal reserve seal
("State" instead of "States" and "Syste" instead of "System").  Can anyone shed
any light on this...the writer claims it was "on the news" earlier this month.
Thanks.

I did not see the original post nor the TV account, but, from the sounds of it,
it could be one of those Magnetic Ink problems where small blocks of ink are
missing in some (random?) pattern. I remember seeing something like this at the
Baltimore show last Fall..  I do not remember the denomination.  Tell this
collector to contact "Bartincor".  Fred Bart ought to know the scoop or figure
it out.

I did see the story on NBC news in NY just before the Memphis show. It was
full of wrong and useless information and short on the facts. The note that
they showed was missing "ES" in "States" in the seal. This could have been
caused by an obstruction on the plate that may have only affected this or a
few other notes or it could have been a chip or defect in the plate which
would be a more significant error even though thousands might have been
produced. The news story didn't make this distinction or have any expert to
explain how this might happen. They just noted that it might be of value to
collectors and stated that the owner was contacting the mint. (Of course,
the mint would tell him to contact the BEP, but what does NBC know about who
produces our money, anyway?) -Russell Kaye
