There have been numerous articles and books about Joshua Norton over the
past several decades. IMHO, the best one is "Norton I of California"
by Fred R. Marckhoff in the March 1962 issue of "The Numismatic
Scrapbook". It has over 10 pages of text, a great photo of Norton I
and illustrations of all five types of notes issued. I also highly
recommend "The Forgotten Characters of San Francisco" by Cowan, Bancroft
and Barros (1949) for more historical detail.
