I tried posting this on rec.crafts.misc and got no replies. I don't
know if the group is dead or just away for the holiday. The next
closest group seems to be this one, but I'm not sure if my question
is appropriate for this group, since it is about making dolls, not
about collecting them. Still, some collectors might do restorative
work and that is reasonably close to making them.
I'm asking this on behalf of my mother who, when we lived in Japan a
few decades ago, took some classes in how to make Japanese dolls (the kind
that stand on a platform wearing a kimono) and in how to make miniature
models of landscapes. She recently asked some Japanese art historians at
a museum where she could get materials do take this activity up again
and they advised her that it is now considered a very old fashioned hobby
and she might have a lot of trouble finding what materials and help she
needs. If you know otherwise, please let me know.
If I don't find the answer here, I'll try a newsgroup devoted to Japanese
