Am I missing posts?

Post by Woodin » Thu, 05 Jul 2001 02:30:23

For some time I've thought that I have been missing various posts on this
and other newsgroups. I never saw the original post headed 'Two old
Herberts' on this NG, but did see the reply.  Can someone tell me if the
original post
appeared in this NG please?

Well ... the answer is "yes and no".  It appeared in my news
server.  It apparently appeared in the one in which the reply you saw
was posted.  I actually received *five* followups to that original.

However, it would appear that *your* news server either did not
receive it, or it expired before you could read it.  The date posted
was: Sun, 1 Jul 2001 22:42:33 +0100
and the news server for that original posting was: news6.giganews.com

The problem is that there are thousands of news servers around
the world, and no answer is true for all of them.  It is not like a web
site, where there is (usually) only one server per site, so there is a
single answer as to whether the web site has or does not have a given
item.

Each news server will miss some of the articles, for any of a
number of reasons.  Some servers are much better than others.  Sometimes
the answers (or at least some of them) arrive before the original
question.

If you believe that you have missed some articles, you probably
should log into Google, which is the current archive web site which
should have most articles which were posted to standard newsgroups.

        Good Luck,
                DoN.
