I need spindle bearing grease suggestions...

Hi, I am a novice metal-worker and am in the process of cleaning up a very
nice old Index model 555 vertical mill. I have torn the table and saddle down
and cleaned and regreased all of the bearings and such. I am now going to do
the same to the head and pulleys. I talked to Wells-Index and have gotten some
pointers about the spindle bearings. They (Wells-Index) recommend Mobil Temp
SHC 32 or Mobilith SHC 15 for re-greasing the spindle bearings. I cannot find
anyone who sells either of these greases in small quantities. I know the SHC
32 comes in tubes (I think). MSC also sells Jet-Lube, and I called Jet-Lube to
get some cross reference grease from them. They suggested a jet-lub
product called ALCO EP-32 Plus Hi temp which MSC sells. Well, I want to be
sure about this. I do not want to ruin the bearings. I also called a company
in Baltimore that sells Duralene products. They recommended a product called
Dura-Life 1200 which is a "new generation" polyurea grease which is recomended
for Steel Mills, off-road equipment, fleet and commercial applications (Read
off of a fax sheet). The Dura-Life 1200 seems like a good product. I have
specs and test results on it, but I don't have anything to compare it to from
Mobil, so...BTW, I called Mobil several times to try and find a vender who
sells small quantities... They told me to call W.W. Grainger, I did but
Grainger doesn't sell either of the Mobil greases. I was looking for some feed
back from anyone out there on these or other products that might do a good job
on my spindle bearings. Thanks.

Kevin Pinkerton. (I am still trying to get my own mail account...)

I have bought Mobil grease in tubes from auto
supply stores. I don't know if it's the same type that
you're looking for, but you might want to call a few
auto stores and see what they have.

I always used Lubriplate - you can get it at your local bearings supply
house.
