Logan Lathe spindle bearings

I recently received a new set of spindle bearings for my Logan modle 400
lathe (Thank you
Scott). This afternoon I removed the spindle. The rear bearing came out
easily, but I don't
know how to get the front bearing off. Could someone please provide me
directions for
removing and replacing this bearing?

A hydraulic press is the best way to go. That's what I used on mine. If you
don't have a press find a local shop with one and have it done. Let them
install the new bearing at the same time. They should know the proper way to
apply pressure to the inner race so the new bearing is not damaged.

Chris, I went throught the same thing with my Model 1915 Logan a few years
ago.  Received new bearings from Scott and went to find a shop to press the
front bearing off.  I hit three or four machine shops and no one wanted to
mess with it.  I decided to go home and build a small press and do it
myself.

Back home I got to looking at the whole thing and really didn't want to
build a press.  I got my wife's hairdryer and began heating the bearing
gently.  I sprayed just a little WD-40 right at the bearing ID to spindle
interface and kept gently heating the bearing.  Soon I noticed the WD-40
disappear between the bearing and the spindle.  At this point the bearing
slipped off easily by hand.

Used the hair dryer and gentle heat to install the new bearing.  Also
believe I kept the spindle in the freezer for several hours prior to
assembly.  New bearing went on just fine.

It worked for me.  This trick saved paying a commercial shop and I never did
build the press.

I probably got the idea from reading a New Departure bearing manual and
noticed the use of electric light bulbs to heat bearings for installation.

A commercial heat gun will provide a bit more oomph is needed.
These will supply hotter air than a hair dryer.  Torch *not*
recommended!

Don't believe there is anything wrong with using a torch for removal of
said bearing, but I would definitely allow the spindle time to come back to
touching temperature before attempting to heat, and fit the new bearing.

If using a torch for heating, direct only at the inner race, and don't
colourize the metal. (<100 C)

At work, when we replace super precision bearings in spindles, we use
light bulbs to heat the inner race.  The trick we use is to put a
small metal funnel over the light bulb and the bearing over the
funnel.  That way, the bearing doesn't touch the glass of the bulb.

I believe that we used 40 watt bulbs - but might have been 25.

Leave them on the bulbs for at least 1/2 hour to heat them up.

Putting the bearing in a hot oil bath (pan of oil on an electric hot plate) is
a common method of heating bearings for installation.

I do Hardinge spindle bearing replacements as part of my job, and I
simply use a paint stripping gun. The one time the airline lost my
toolbox, I placed the bearing on a lightbulb, in a shop lite facing
up, in Direct contact with the bulb, went and grabbed a soda and a
smoke and came back and slipped the bearing right on. (and Hardinge
bearing fits are Snug!!)

Err, Gunner, if I may ask, how long do you think it would take me
to replace the drive belts in my HLV at work?

This given that I have never done this task before on a hardinge,
and that I am reasonably technically inclined.  I have the belts
sitting in the tool cabinet because the machine has a bit of
a vibration at the low end of the high range, and all I can see
that is wrong is the belts are old and a bit worn.

Anything in particular to pay attention to when doing it?
