lead lettering

lead lettering

Hope this isn't too far from this NG's subject scope, but I'm wondering if
anyone is familiar with the processes/tricks of the trade involved with
producing the lead lettering often found on old tombstones. It usually
occurs on marble stones, and was really popular about 100 years ago. Does
anyone have any info on how it was done specifically, or where I might
search?

Thanks.

I've been in the gravestone business for 17+ years, but never heard of
'lead lettering'. Can you describe it? Maybe then I can ask some of
the old farts at work :)

I saw this done on the corner stone of a building, when I was a boy.  The
lettering was cut as a deep groove, then the lead was hammered in, and
expanded with tool that looked like a marine caulking iron.  The next
step was to dress it even with the stone with a file.  Riffler and foot files
were used if my memory serves me correctly.
