OT: Cruise to Alaska, what to pack?

DH and I are going on a cruise to Alaska in August.  What on earth do
I pack?  It's not the standard bikini fare (not that I own any!), any
shorts?  all pants? lots of sweaters, heavy jacket?  I figure
someone(s) here have been on said adventure, any thoughts?  We're
going on NCL SuperStarLeo and then spending five days or so in
Vancouver, haven't hammered that all out yet.  Only five months away!!
:)

TIA!

Well, I live only a short 16 hour drive from Alaska, and about 26 hours
north of Vancouver, so I can't help you on the Vancouver dressing but up
here? Well in summer the sun shines for almost 24 hours a day and when it
gets hot it gets really hot!
If you are going in the beginning of August, take some warm weather clothes
and some sweaters. If you are going later in the month, it gets a tad
cooler, especially in the evenings.

I went the 2nd week of September a couple of years ago.  There were days
where light slacks and a long sleeve tee shirt was plenty warm and nights
where a heavy jacket, silk long johns, thick jeans, a shirt and a warm
sweater weren't nearly enough!
I did take my bathing suit (one piece) and used it in the pool once, in the
hot tubs a couple of times and in the sauna a few times too....

Pack for layers!  Especially if you are going hiking or on any of the day
trips.  I think the high when we were there (went from Seward to Vancouver)
was about 58 and the low was 28?  Wind chill on the boat moving at night
was, well, downright chilly.... I don't know how late in August you are
going, but i'm sure a few weeks would make a big difference in weather!
I've been to Anchorage in June when it was warmer there than it was in
Chicago where we had left...

I enjoyed the cruise thoroughly!  can't wait to take the family someday!  I
think the kiddos will love it there too!

oh... and make sure your camera works before you go so you don't take 35
rolls of film that have ghosts in the middle......

Kellie

Laura, I can't help you as far as knowing what to pack, but I can assure you
I will be very, very jealous of you getting to go on this adventure! I
really want to do an Alaskan cruise, but DH is bound and determined he will
only go south!

Wow! For a minute there, I thought I was about to meet another RCTQer!
DH and I, along with DT (dear twin) and her DH are also going on a
cruise to Alaska in August! <G> But we're going on RC Radiance of the
Seas, round trip from Vancouver. Can't wait! But I'm also pondering
clothing needs. <g>

OT: Cruise to Alaska, what to pack?

Post by D & » Fri, 05 Mar 2004 11:40:57

Okay, so it has been a few years since I went on a cruise to Alaksa, but I
did go in late August.  My advice is pack sweaters, sweat tops and a coat.
No shorts, just long pants.  It is surprising how cold it is on deck when
the ship is moving.  When you are near the glaciers it can be very cold
especially if the wind is coming off the glaciers.  I would also pack an
umbrella, especially if you are stoping in Ketchecan.  It rains almost every
day there.  We were the last trip to Alaska that summer and the storms
virtually followed us south to Vancouver.  I am jealous because I would love
to cruise Alaska again.  The views are breathtaking.
Hope this helps
Louise

You can 'pack' me ... I volunteer to be your wardrobe consultant
on voyage. Just get me a stateroom in the hold and I'll be happy.

Laura
When will you be spending time in Vancouver?  Those of us in the area would
love to try and meet and greet with you if we can set it up.
E-mail me your dates and I'll try and set something up.
My mom's cruised up to Alaska twice, once in May, the other in September.
Don't count on bikini weather.  Make sure you have a warm jacket, hat, scarf
for when you view the glacier.  Weather can be iffy to say the least.  Some
folks have experienced a lot of rain in the towns they got off to see, a
small umbrella is worth throwing in your suitcase.
Have a great time!
