English Paper Piecing - Getting those edges straight

I am currently hand piecing a Star of David using 24 diamond shaped segments.
I'm finding it difficult to match up my corners so they make a smooth
line when I piece 4 diamonds together to complete a larger shaped diamond
segment. When I have one end smooth, I often end up with a notch at the
other end where the corners meet. Finally I tried matching up the corners
first and taking a few stitches to secure one end before starting at the
other end and easing the in-between part. I am more satisfied with my end
results this way, but I wonder if anyone has a better tip.
