Super Fabric Bargains, July

There have been numerous threads on quality of fabric vis a vis
type of store. We will NOT go there now. But, I would like to
talk about (BRAG about?) scoring super bargains! Let's not talk
about every piece of fabric we've ever bought ... let's just talk
about fantastic bargains we've gotten the last few months, June &
July 2003.

Since this is my idea I get to start. ;) In July I noticed that
the LQS had yellow Halloween Border Fabric on clearance for only
$3/yard. Normal price was about $6.50 IIRC. I did remember that
Wendy had purchased some of it when she came here in the Spring.
I sent her an e-mail and asked if she wanted to split yardage
with me. I proposed to buy about 3 yards and cut it in half
lengthwise so we'd each have long pieces to border Halloween
quilts. That would be about 22" x 3 yards for $4.50 each. Not
bad. Couldn't go to store right away for some reason. Finally got
there during the July 25,26,27 "Christmas in July Sale" and
really had fun! For that sale only, the $3 clearance was buy two
yards, get third yard free. Woo Hoo! Since it was "Souper Sunday"
I contributed canned soup for the local food pantry for charity.
I was delighted to learn that such contributions were 'rewarded'
with a free yard of the clearance fabric, shopper's choice. So
.... I went there to pay $9 for 3 yards of fabric but ended up
with 4 yards of fabric for just $6 ... LESS than the original
price of one yard. I mailed Wendy her half, so we each have 22" x
4 yards for Halloween fun.

So, what fabric bargains did you find this summer/winter? PAT in
VA/USA

Wow, Pat. What a er, ummm, coup? If anybody can beat your High Order of the
Black Belt shoppers, I'm eager to hear it.  Good for you.  Polly

I managed a fairly good bargin from Magical Threads in Dahlonega on my
last visit there -- early July I think.  I am making a ragg quit for a friend
who is into cows and I have about 12 or 13 different cow fabrics to use.  I was
going through the 50% off sale bin and what did I find but one of those sets of
nine batik themed blocks (6" square I think) -- all COWS!  Imagine my joy at
learning that everything in the store --- including already sale priced items
-- was on sale for an additional 40% or 50%!
These little batik block sets (I am sure most of you have seen them all
stapled together with a card stock header) are usually about $15 a set -- I got
mine for something like $5.00!  Since they are going into a ragg quilt, I just
top stitched them to muslin squares of the right size.  I left about 3/4" of
the batik print edge loose so that it could fray too!   Should be *really* cute
mixed inwith all those other cow fabrics!  CiaoMeow >^;;^<

I got 4 yards of 100% cotton fabric with the cutest jungle animals for 99
cents.  It was on a bolt marked $5.00, then the discount tag said $3.99 and it
was a purple tag (which happend to be 50% off that day) then when the gal rang
it up it came to a total of 99 cents.  whoohooo!

My bargain was on Chanukah fabric that I purchased in January this year.  I
noticed it at $8.00 yd. around holiday time.  Since there was no way I would
actually use it this year I watched and waited.  I got 4 different designs
for $1.00 yd each.  I bought enough to make some table runners for gifts.  I
am now ready for this year!

Yippeee for bargains!

It's turning into a white elephant for me! The two quilts I have going right
now are very dark, and the light border isn't right for them. Looks like I'm
going to have to buy more light-colored Halloween fabric. *sigh* The
sacrifices we make for our art. At least I saved tons of money on the
border, so I can afford to get more fabric!

Several of the cities around here have neighborhood garage sale
weekends.  I try to avoid these because driving and parking is next to
impossible, but I had to drop my son off for a camping trip, so I
figured I'd brave the local lunatic bargain hunters who were out in
force.

There are a couple of quilters I've bought from at these sales (ok, so
I don't avoid them all!), so I tracked down one of them and scored
some lovely Kaufman Christmas fabric for 50 a yard (bought all of
it, 2 yards).  Then I went rummaging in her boxes and found patterns.
A LOT of patterns, all unused.  I told her that I was buying for the
guild (most were crafty things, primitive dolls, etc.) and how much
did she want for all of them?  $20.  When I got home, I went through
them and there are 68 patterns, unused, most with the price tags still
on them.  The guild will LOVE them!

Hobby Lobby now has tables of fabrics for $1.00, $2.00, $3.00 and
$5.00 (don't ask me what happens to the $4.00 fabric) The strange
thing is that you will find a print for $1.00 at one store and for
$3.00 at another. I stop at any Hobby Lobby that I happen to be
passing. Have limited myself to the $1.00 and $2.00 tables. If it is
good for a back I buy 8 to 10 yards.

With so much of the new fabrics in the regular quilting stores selling
for $8.50 to $10.00 I think these Hobby Lobby sales tables will be
cleared soon.

My friend, Beatrice in Berlin, has longed to own At Home in the
Woods by Mikenna Ryan for some time, but the cost of this pattern plus
shipping to Germany plus customs has put her off.  Both she and I
agree that a pattern should be less than $8 and a book less than $20
(or thereabouts) otherwise we feel a bit ripped off... so these BOM
that add up to hundreds of dollars are not our thing.
Well, it's $85 at www.bighornquilts.com and that is the best price I
could find for ages, until a sale at www.thesecretworkshop.com in
Canada.  After the conversion into dollars (I can think in dollars and
pounds sterling, but not Canadian dollars) it was about $55 US.
Yippee!  So I gritted my teeth and ordered it for her Christmas.  Hey,
last Christmas she gave me her EQ4 when she upgraded to EQ5.  No one
understands my hobby/obsession like she does, and vice versa.  So my
mates deserve the best!  Boy, is she going to be surprised when she
gets that!

Woohoo!
My LQ(and craft)S has a clearance wall, and after our "Quilt Party" meeting (2
hours of presenting new products, a quick demo, show and tell, door prizes, and
an exchange block with some fabric and the pattern provided), the Dept. Head
said,
all clearance fabric on the wall is marked down to 50% off the last marked
price!!!

How about paying $1.50 per yard for excellent name brand cotton fabric, THEN
getting an extra 10% off the last of what was on the bolt!

I felt like I was in the '70's at this price.

My most recent find was at TSWLTH. They currently have a selection of
anniversary fabrics priced at $1.79 per yard. I used a 50% off coupon
to get a fabulous plum paisley that will be the backing fabric on my
latest project. I think 7.5 yds were about $6.50.  I was pretty happy!

My bargain wasn't fabric.  I got a set of BH&G's American Patchwork & Quilting,
issues #1-63, for $2 per issue plus postage.   I do not subscribe to this one
so only about 10 issues duplicate what I already have.
