question for lampworkers

Post by Erin-Joi Collins McNea » Tue, 06 Dec 2005 11:42:45

Lurker with a question:

I've assembled supplies for Christmas gifts and have a question for the
lampworkers. I've bought glass beads from several folks. Some come with the
bead release completely cleaned out of the hole, some still have a lot
inside. I like the clean look. Is there a way to clean it out without hours
of reaming? I was hoping that maybe vinegar or something else would clean
out the white gunk.

Please help!

get the "stiff' pipe cleaners from a tobacco store...
they work better than the soft craft type.

An overnight soak in some denture cleaner is said to work...
generally I find a good overnight soak in soapy water (same as you
would do dishes) - and a quick swab with the pipe cleaners - will
usually remove the slight residue.

Sometimes even when I "clean" beads out - they look perfectly clean ...
but a day or two later I can see dried "white" inside --- it's hard to
be "perfect" cleaning beads.

If you're buying lampwork that still has bead release in the hole, chances
are you're buying imported mass-produced beads that are not annealed.
Cleaning them might cause them to break.  If you're certain they are
annealed, you should be able to clean them with a bead reamer that has a
diamond bit.  Be sure to do so in water, though, because the dust can be
irritating to breathe.
