Advice on Acc. Min.'s TBF-1C

Hi All

I've decided to detail my P-47D's***pit with an Eduard
set, but I have to wait for it to come in. So I thought I'd
build an Avenger OTB while I'm waiting for the Eduard set.
This is my first AM kit and I'd appreciate any advice from
those who have built this awesome looking kit .( I'm tempted
to just lay out all these neat little pieces and look at
them :-))

Take your time and dry-fit, dry-fit, dry-fit........if you dry-fit every
assembly it will come out beautifully.  The only thing you really need
to change is the pilot's seat belt as you really have to look to see the
gunner's and bombardier's belts........also be very careful gluing the
turret halves and fitting the turret into the plane.  Which particular
version are you doing as the ordnance loads can get tricky to fit too?

I've done three with varying levels of add-ons, the first was OOB with
new seat belts, the second had seat belts and dropped flaps and the
third had full Eduard PE and KMC wingfolds.

Try looking up Military Model Preview isuue 3.09. They have an EXCELLENT
build-up of AM's TBF-1C. In fact, it could ALMOST replace the kit
instructions. I lack a scanner, so I can't e-mail it to you. Maybe
someone out there can do this?

Sorry Floyd, but I don't have that issue. Sure thought I did though. But my
advice for Dudley would be to not even start on the Avenger yet. Because one
of two things could happen.
1: You would get so involved with the Avenger that you'll end up putting the
P-47 on hold.
or
2: You'll be wanting to get to the P-47 so bad that you'll rush through the
Avenger.

The AM Avenger is a real work of art and with a fair amount of TLC can
really be a thing of beauty when done. It's really not the kind of kit
you'll want to do a weekend slam together on, even though with the fantastic
fit, it could be done. But with all the wealth of detail inside, it's a kit
that really deserves a little time and care to bring out it's real beauty.
Maybe another kit would be a better choice for a slam together while waiting
for the P-47 detail set. If you build 1/72 aircraft, the Academy P-39 or
about any of their new 1/72 line would fill the bill. They have a pretty
good fit and wouldn't need too much detail work. They come at a reasonable
price and look real nice when done.

Haven't built the TBM/TBF, but I have built a number of other AM kits. All
I can say is:

1. Enjoy, it'll be a wonderful experience.
2. They aren't kidding - go in the order they give you!

I'm probably the only one to make this mistake, but....

When you get to the decals, notice that the black-and-white location
drawing shows the fuselage national insignia extending upward onto the
dorsal strake.  Not correct! Check out the photo on the box bottom for
the correct location, which is below the strake.

A small thing, but it changes the whole appearance of the A/C. I
goofed up and had to remove the decal and touch-up paint. AM sent me a
new sheet, no problem.
