Gen : how to translate Japanese web sites.

I know this seems off-topic, but since I like to model modern Japanese
aircraft, I surf a lot on japanese web sites. Problem is : I don't read
japanese, so I click on every possible link on every page, in the hope of
finding good pictures. In 75% of the cases I find no pics, not of aircraft
that is. Today I discovered pics of nice japanese girls (clothed !). Good
that my wife was not looking.
Anyway, I'm tired of guessing and clicking and waisting my time looking at
the pets, pc's, cars, bikes, mothers and girlfriends of japanese modellers.
is it possible to install some automatic translation software on my pc, that
would convert some or all of that text in english ?
Thanks for the info.
Maybe Scott Hards (HLJ) can help, if he reads this.
By the way, great service HLJ.

Don't know, but FWIW

I think there is a standard oriental character set called  Big 5
I regularly get spam that's complete gobbledigook from some moron in
Taiwan that uses it.  If you put 'translation' in some search engine
like  http://www.dogpile.com  maybe something usefull will turn up.  I'm
not that interested to pursue figuring out how to make such a thing
actually work on my machine (and probably would not be able to if I was!).

For japanese, select the Shift_JIS character set in your browser,
as that is what most japanese pages use. that way some text becomes
readable english and the rest shows up as kana or kanji.

Pierre::

Try the following site:

http://www.dgs.monash.edu.au/~jwb/wwwjdic.html

I have used it in the past to translate some of Rainbow
Ten's Japanese pages.

Hi Pierre, here's what I do when visited Japanese scale modeling website.
1) Bring your cursor to the *clickable* button or underlined text
2) Hold your cursor until the link-address show up. I use IE 5.0, the
address can be seen at the lower left corner and the good thing is : it is
written in English. Just look for something ends with "..... pictures.htm"
or "..... gallery.htm"

Hope it helps

Gen : how to translate Japanese web sites.

That's a good tip which I always use. Problem is that most often the words
that appear on your screen have no meaning to me. They don't always mention
'pictures' or 'gallery'. Si if someone reads this, I'm still looking for a
solution.
BTW : I found a website (Monarch university ?) with translation software
(well not exactly) that works as follows. You type the URL of the japanese
web page, and press enter. What happens is, that now you see japanese
characters instead of garbage. But I don't read japanese..
Any suggestions ?
