Where are all the messages?

Post by Dr. Roger M. Wallsgrov » Wed, 22 Apr 1998 04:00:00

Have I missed something, or has rms suddenly passed out of favour?  All
my recent browsings have pulled out only a handful of messages, changing
only slowly (mostly on RAAF F-4s and Me163s recently ...).
Where is everybody??!!  Or has my server been nobbled?

Man I feel sorry for you.  My problem is finding the time to read the 600 or
700 msgs that build up in the course of a few days of actually doing some
work.

DUH!  Dr. Wallsgrove probably can't read this!?

Back to surf-lurking... eh, "slurking"

Nobbled??? Man! I love the terms you Brits use! I do not think RMS is
out of favor, just a slow couple of weeks. Might be that the
Holiday/contest season is here in the USA and many of us are not home
as much.

I think your "nobbled". I check the board every day and there are usually
between 150 and 200 new messages.

Your server has probably bit the dust.  I'm still getting about 200 a day,
albeit only 25-50 are worth reading.

I think you've been nobbled. I check the NG twice a day most days a
week and there are always between 150 and 350 articles showing up as
new.

Roger

The problem is with your Internet Service Provider who "collects" the
messages and stores them on his server for your viewing. Depends on
*how* he assimilates the messages as to how many you have available to
read (RMS will easily average 200 posts per day). Further, how many
messages he stores for how long depends on his server capacity, the
smaller ISPs clearing their older messages more frequently (if you
don't check every few days, you'll miss posts already purged). Also,
some ISPs purge the space-hogging binaries groups more frequently,
this being the reason posts on alt.binaries.models.scale disappear
very quickly on some ISP servers..

Some of the better ISPs subscribe to a service such as Zippo (Newsguy)
to collect messages for them. If you're stuck with an ISP who has poor
newsgroup service, you can still subscribe to a good news service
yourself for fees ranging from free to $10/mo (SuperNews) to
$19.95/year (Newsguy) depending on which/how many newsgroups you want
to access. For example, Newsguy will keep around the latest 5000 RMS
messages, so you can go back several weeks.

Of course, you can always do a check on Dejanews to see the latest
headers, and if you have the time, use the web to read the
messages....

Before you spend any money on a separate news service, let your ISP
know that you're not getting the service for which you contracted,
reminding him of the class action suit brought against AOL when they
didn't deliver...
