AM SBD-3 Question

AM SBD-3 Question

Post by LCDR16 » Fri, 18 Jul 1997 04:00:00

Before I run out and by the first release of the SBD-3 and then try to
figure out how best to scratch up a twin gun mount (I want to build a
Guadalc***based SBD-4), does anyone know if AM plans a subsequent SBD-3
release with the twin .30 cal mount.  In view of the changes in the
ordnance  with each of the TBF/TBMs, this doesn't seem to be an outlandish
thought.

Run out and buy the AM SBD-5 instead!  It has the twin rear gun mount.

Happy modeling:   ModelHawk

Looking at the sprue breakdown in both the -3 and -5 kits, I'd guess
probably not.  All the model specific parts like the fuselage (the -5
fuselage has the sliding side doors for the gun mount), engine cowling
and gun mounts are on separate sprues.  The sprues are not gated, so it
looks like AM would have to mold both sets of sprues, mix and match the
specific parts, and discard the rest to do a -3 with a twin mount.

Lot more difference between the -4 and -5: cowling intake gone and only
one cooling flap per side, longer further aft accessory section vent,
reflector sight istead of tube than the -3 and -4: 24 volt system, factory
provision for ASB, twin .30 with factory stowage (also on late -3s)
Hamilton-Standard hydramatic prop (always sounded like a washing machine
name) instead of the counter weight prop.

You're probably right it would be easy to mix and match the parts from
both kits to make one -4 as the -5 din't get to the pacific till late
1943.

The -5 has the twin gun mount.  Would have been nice to have it in the -3
for a Midway plane.
