Thanks Pirjo, that looks like a great idea to use up the VERY large bag of
double knitting yarn I thought I'd lost.  DH found when rummaging in the
attic looking for dressing up clothes for our 22 year old son.  I think that
it's blankets for refugees year!!

Pirjo,

I checked it out and I can't imagine casting on that many stitches. Good luck
to anyone who tries it.

I knit one of these last year and got a blue ribbon for it at the fair.
It is my favorite afghan, never to be given or sold...

:) Just enjoy from the bottom of your heart! That is what I do. Knitting or
stitching, I enjoy it.

I can't knit that either. I'd miscount it before all were done.

You lucky one! Can't deny...that would feel great. I mean...those blue
ribbon things. But maybe it is better if I am the way I am. I mean my
knitting.

Pirjo,

I didn't mean to brag about the blue ribbon, but meant that for me it
was a special achievement because this particular afghan is probably the
biggest thing I ever did in one piece. At times it seemed never-ending;
when I got to the last 1/3 I had to put the whole thing in a big
pillowcase in order to be able to handle it. However, once it was done,
what a treasure! If I ever do such an afghan out of leftover yarns again
(and I will...), my plan is to knit three separate narrower 'tubes' and
sew them together.

For me the blue ribbons give encouragement. There was a time when I
couldn't knit or sew at all for about two years. My fingers could feel
nothing until I had a very serious neck operation. It took 6.5 hrs to
fuse four neck vertrebrae with a piece of my hipbone. Now I can feel
with my fingers again, and do lots and lots of knitting and other
things. Not a day goes by without my knitting something, for the pure
joy of being able to do it.

And you know what it is to love knitting... :-)

My advice to anyone planning on knitting this afghan is to use two 29"
circular needles. It was impossible to try knitting it with one needle,
and actually it became much more enjoyable as soon as I added the second
needle. I never regretted starting the afghan, and certainly enjoyed it
once it was finished, but also almost missed it since I had gotten so
attached to it by many 'strings' in the 2 months it took to make.
