My father-in-law left me his coin collection, and among other things there
is a complete Susan B. Anthony set, including the '79 and '81 type 2
proofs. I was just adding the '99s to his Dansco album tonight, and was
taking my first careful look at the coins..
Unfortunately, although I can see the difference between the two mint
marks in the 79s, the 81s look identical to me. Would someone here please
point me to some place on the web with pictures? As I recall, the RedBook
shows the difference, but my copy is unavailable for the next few days.
Also, unlike the other coins in this set, his 81 type 2 is lightly but
beautifully toned on the devices. But with the toning are two small
perfectly circular spots with tiny dark centers. The spots are only about
a millemeter or two in diameter, and the dark centers are only visible
under magnification. It looks like my father-in-law might haved breathed
on the coin while putting it into the album.
My question is this- would it be foolish of me to lightly dip this coin?
And I really hate to lose the nice toning. Anyone have any other
suggestions? BTW, I already tried an acetone bath for a few seconds, and
it didn't help a bit..........:-(
In the beginning there was nothing, and God said, "Let there be light."
And there was still nothing, but you could see it.
