1979 Kennedy Half Proof Type I & II

What is the difference between a 1979 Type I and
1979 Type II Kennedy Half? (and does the same apply
to the 1981 Type I and Type II?)

1979 Kennedy Half Proof Type I & II

This may become the never ending thread.  This was discussed ad
nauseum recently.  In a nutshell, the 1979 "blob" Type I mintmark has
absolutely nothing to do with the 1981 Type I mintmark.  Different
animals- entirely.  There is no "blob" S mintmark in 1981.  With that
out of the way, the rest is simple.  The 1979 Types are very easy to
see- the "blob" and the clear S mint marks.  Not so with the 1981
Varieties I and II.  The type 2 mintmark in 1981 is characterized by
round bulbous serifs and a flattened (parallel to the field) look,
like a mountain range which has been bulldozed to half its altitude.
Neither 1981 mint mark  looks  like a blob, so the description of a
"clear" mint mark in 1981 is very misleading, and should be abandoned,
IMHO.  Maybe we should use "bulbous" or "planed" or "shaved."  :-)

Scott:

The punch used for the mintmark was changed and a "clearer" s was used
for the type II. Pictures of these mintmarks can be found in many coin
books. The Type I seems to be more of a blob and generally has little
definition to the loops of the "s", the type II has a better seperation
between the loops and the serifs in the "s".

Not all more clearly defined mintmarks are Type II as has been
previously mentioned within this newsgroup. If you are curious as to
whether or not you have a Type II coin, you might want to get a few
other opinions from your local dealers.

For those interested - I have copies of an old Numismatic News Variety
Scorecard that Alan Herbert made up that show the differences between the
Ty 1 and Ty 2 MMs of 1979 and 1981 proof coins and show various other
variety comparisons and diagnostics.  They sent me about a thousand copies,
so don't be shy - if you need two copies just ask!  Send a self addressed
stamped long envelope and indicate what you want .
