DAVID PICKENS RECEIVES ANA GOVERNMENT SERVICE AWARD

The American Numismatic Association (ANA) presents its
Outstanding Government Service Award in recognition of efforts
to advance numismatics in the previous 12 months.
First conferred in 1991, the ANA Outstanding Government
Service Award is presented to an individual working in or retired
from public service who has helped advance the interests of the
hobby.
The 2000 award recipient is David Pickens, associate
director for numismatics at the United States Mint.  He is a
familiar face and name in numismatics, working with the U.S. Mint
and the hobby in his current position from 1990 to 1991 and 1994
to the present.
Picken's innovative ideas have won him praise and honors
from the advertising and marketing industry. Working with the
director of the Mint, he strived to alleviate the problems created by
an abundance of commemorative coin programs and high mintages,
and to stem the declining number of U.S. collectors.  During his
tenure, the Mint launched its highly successful 50 State Quarters
Program and new Sacagawea golden dollar.  In addition, Pickens
has been involved with the Mint's Money Story video, and Internet
site for young collectors and teachers, "H.I.P. Pocket Change."
Prior to joining the Mint staff, Pickens held positions with
the House of Representatives Select Committee on Narcotics;
Treasury Department Congressional Affairs and Law Enforcement
Office; U.S. Customs Service; Bureau of ***, Tobacco and
Firearms; Department of Justice; and the White House.
Among his many honors, Pickens received the 1997
Presidential Rank Award of Meritorious Executive for Career
Service, the 1995 National Performance Review Hammer Award,
the 1995 Portfolio Award, the 1991 Silver Anvil Award and the
1990 Graphics Excellence Award.
In bestowing its Outstanding Government Service Award,
the American Numismatic Association expresses the sincere
appreciation of its members.
