Value of Proof 1981 Clear "s" SBA?

Value of Proof 1981 Clear "s" SBA?

The picture shown states the coin is TYPE l
which means it is  a filled S. and is listed in
the RED BOOK as a value of $7.00.  If it was
TYPE 2 which means  it is a clear S.  the value
as listed in the RED BOOK  is $85.00.  Both
types must be a PROOF coin.  The selling
price would vary up or down depeding where it
is purchased and from whom.   You need a
good  loupe  and a good eye to determine
whether it is a filled or clear  S.

ALL 1981-S proof coins have clear "S" mintmarks.  This is because the so-called
"blob" mintmark punch broke in 1979 and was never used again.  The 1981-s type
one is actually the same as the 1979-s type II...it was still in use two years
later.  However, late in the year, it, too broke & was replaced by the 1981-s
type II mintmark which is not only relatively "clear" but also has a slightly
elongated upper loop in the "s".  I specialize in type two mintage buying &
selling hundreds per year.

If you would like I can send you a copy of several magazine articles that have
pictures and descriptions that may allow you to tell for yourself whether it is
a type II or a type I mintmark.

By the way, if it is type I it is worth about $3-4.  If it is a type II 1981-s
SBA then it is worth  around $70-80.  There is no 1981-s proof SBA that is
worth $25.  I pay either
$3 or $70 depending on type. The $25 offer may be a ripoff...or it could be a
very high price for a type I.

Advise if I can be of help.

Value of Proof 1981 Clear "s" SBA?

Not to me, Oliff.  It looks like a Type 2 in the JPEG.  Note how long
the upper part of the "S" looks.  There was no "filled" S mint mark in
1981.  "Clear" S is misleading at best for the 1981 Proof mint mark,
IMHO.  Aram.

Does the top of the S look like a snake's head, sort of "bulbous?"  If
so, it would be a Type 2.  IMHO.  Aram.
