1981 Anthony Proof Type Question

Post by Harold Menze » Fri, 28 Feb 2003 04:51:39

I was going through my old coins and trying to get an idea of
their value.
I have some 1981 proof sets and there is a substantial
difference between type 1 and 2.
Can someone tell me the difference, so that I can determine
what mine are?
        Thanks, Harold Menzel

Seem to remember that the S marks in '81 were either clear or kinda filled in -
the clear ones the correction and thus type 2 I think -

Not at all.  I don't have any way to host pics right now.  Having trouble
with my ISP's site building software.

Just one bit of advice...two, actually.  Don't quit if the SBA isn't type
2...the cent's worth up to $40 if spot free and nice and the half will bring
$6-$15 on Ebay, too.
Of course, if your set is ALL type 2, DO NOT break it out for the individual
coins, as the complete set is worth over $300 if in the original holder and is
not "put together".

I noticed none of the posts so far have mentioned the easiest identifier for
type 2 1981 mintmarks, namely the slightly flattened top loop of the "S"
mintmark.  It's the only thing I look at to identify type on the 1981 proof
coins.  Most other identifiers have proved unreliable.  Remember, that with the
'79 sets it's "clarity"...with the '81 sets its "shape...of the top loop".

I think I forgot to mention that I was offered a gold rimmed PCI certified PF69
1981 SBA type two at the Rochester, MN show last week.  I had to look twice, as
the dealer had a correctly identified raw type 2 in his case also. This is the
3rd time (NGC was one and I'm not sure of the other) I have seen mis-attributed
'81 SBAs in slabs.  Further evidence that slabbing is precious little guarantee
of anything and the only real protection is in knowledge.  Like many, this
dealer had no clue why I was interested in the raw coin and not the slabbed
one.  I explained the problem to him, but I'm not sure he ever withdrew the PCI
one from his case.  I'm wondering what he paid for it...
