I regret to have to tell you that it is not worth a mint at all.

It is a zinc plated steel cent, and is really rather common.

The 1943 PDS Cents should all be magnetic.  They are zinc-coated
steel.  The ones that are very valuable are struck on copper alloy,
bronze, I believe, and are not magnetic at all.  HTH  Aram.

1943 is the year they made the penny's out of steel, not silver.
The coin isnt magnetic unless it was magnetized by being stuck to a
magnet (a strong one) for a long time. The coin can be picked up by a magnet
since its steel. Its a common penny unless its in such excellent shape that
there isnt a mark on it anywhere. I hope he didnt buy the coin from someone
that he paid more than a penny or so for!
