Coin Shows: Get better deals??

Post by des » Thu, 24 Jun 1999 04:00:00

I have never been to a coin show. All I know is that
my local coin store is a ripoff.  Can most generally
get better deals at coins shows?  Any advice while
at a coin show?

thanks

If your local store has high prices (ala Coin World Trends or above)
then you can do much better at most coin shows.  As for tips, I post
from time to time a list of tips under "Coin show do's and don'ts
(repost)," you can go to www.deja.com and search for it.

In general, I believe coin shows are one of the best places to buy
coins.

Hopefully, your local coin shop isn't that big of rip-off.  Remember, these
guys have to pay rent & other overheads.

A coin show is where it is at baby!

The best thing about coin shows is that you get to look at and compare coins
at a lot of different tables.  Not all coin dealers are created equal.

If given the chance, you should look through as many inventory boxes as you
can.  Nothing will educate you about coins better than looking at a couple
hundred coins of the same series.

Watch out for the shiny ones!

Yes and no.  The best thing about a coin show is you can look at the
inventory of a lot of dealers in a short period of time, and without
driving all over town(s).  Some of the dealers may have items priced
higher than your coin store, but you may also find some priced lower.
(If you can't find anyone with prices lower than you coin store, then
it is possible that are not a ripoff after all!).
