Kentucky Penny?

Post by TheOtherOn » Fri, 26 Jan 2001 19:23:59

I'm not necessarily a coin collector, but I found this penny a while back
and I haven't found anyone who can tell me what the deal is with it.  It's a
1975 Lincoln penny...on the front, to Lincoln's right (as if he's looking at
it) is an outline of the state of Kentucky.  The letters "KY" are inside the
outlined area.

What is this?  I've never seen this before.  Is it just somebody playing
games?

Thanks for any info.

Ryan,
These are novelty items.  The image of KY was added (punched in) after it
left the US Mint.  As such it has no numismatic value, but there are people
who collect them. They would fall into the category of exonumia; altered
coins similar in concept to the elongated cents ("smashed pennies") that
can be made in machines at zoos, arcades and amu***t parks.  I have some
punched cents that have the Apollo space mission insignias on them, and one
that has a pumpkin on it that was created at the Circleville, OH Pumpkin
Festival.  Besides images of the 50 states, I have also seen one that made
it look like Lincoln was smoking a cigar.
Hope this helps.

It was made at the Kentucky state fair from a regular penny as a souvenier.

IIRC, there is a 50 state Lincoln Cent collection made by some company.
I think it is a map and each cent has an outline of one of the states
and the initials stamped into it. I saw an ad somewhere for it but it
didn't stick in the grey matter.

Didn't we see someone selling "gold" quarters before with this
description?

"I don't know what this is!  I found this in my change, it's a quarter
with a golden color.  I don't know if this is an error or not!"

While other dealers were hard at work selling their gold plated
quarter set, 5 for $10, this guy got $35 for his 1 quarter. Twice!

Send them to me...

You'll see this on ebay soon afterwards.

"I don't know what happened to these nickles!  I got them in my mail
from a renowed coin collector. Look at the incredible toning.  I
