"Collecting World Coins" versus "Standard Catalog of World Coins"

Folks,

I note that Krause produces two books that sound similar  - "Collecting
World Coins" versus "Standard Catalog of World Coins."  What's the
difference? I have an edition of Standard Catalog and am wondering if
anything's to be gained by also getting a copy of Collecting.

Thoughts on this?

That's what I thought. Thanks, Ian.

Scot,

`Collecting World Coins' is the dummed down version of `SCWC'. The only
difference that I can see is that there are no commem's whatsoever in
the former. IMHO you are well ahead with SCWC.

The 32nd edition of SCWC includes some 40 pages of copper-nickel Isle of Man
crowns, 25 pages of Marshall Islands "collector" coinage whose redemption
value is questionable, and 25 pages of similar material from Liberia.  These
are the biggest listings, but one could add several dozen more pages that
are clogged with material that isn't intended for circulation as coinage.
Sure, I'm glad that someone is cataloging this stuff, but a newcomer to the
hobby might find it unnecessarily complicated.  I believe that CWC addresses
the needs of the newcomer.

By the way, the listings of the 4 items produced under the rubric of Lundy
Island have been deleted from the 32nd, I suppose to make room for all those
"real" coins from IOM.  Harrumph!

Take for example someone who is a `newbie' but sees commem's in their
loose change (happens al;l the time here in the UK).......for such an
individual `Collecting World Coins' would be about as useful as a one
legged man in an a**e kicking competition.

IMHO it is less than worthless as it conveys to the newbie a false
impression of the scope of modern numismatics. Some of the most sought
after modern collectable coins are `commem's', besides some people must
be collecting those IOM and Marshall Islands or they wouldn't make 'em ;-)

Yeah, just like all those USA commeratives that are issued, those "real"
coins.
