Newgroup Traffic Counts?

Michael E. Marotta spoke thusly...
I went to some sites. I did see that rec.collecting.coins is one of
the Top 20
in terms of number of posts and volume of traffic.

And Stujoe from Illinois replied:

So, I offer this set from 1997 as the best stats I have found so far.
http://livinginternet.com/u/news_millennianet/1997-02-13.htm#GROUPSIZE

As I said in my original post, if I were not committed, I would write
a program, say in Basic (VB) to open the Groups.Googles archives for
rec.collecting.coins and parse the headers to gather usernames and
count them.  It seems pretty straight forward.

I think the problem with those stats, and most that I have ever
found, is that they are only from one news-server, as best as I can
tell. That may be appropriate for posting statistice if the archive
was complete enough (thinking something like Google Groups/Deja
here).
I am not sure what is meant by "article size" in those stats. I find
it weird that rcc's "article size" could be in the same league as
some of those binary groups if I am thinking the right kind of
article size.

Fairly accurate posting statistics could probably be found somewhere
on the net but I think reading or access statistics (the only way to
count lurkers) could never be really known. There are just too many
news-servers and I don't think they report to any central location.
For example, through my ISP, I have access to 3 or 4 distinct news-
servers that I have full access to located in different cities in the
midwest. The same company (SBC) also runs the prodigy news-servers
and the SBC/Yahoo news-servers which are distinct as far as access
goes. I only have reading access to the latter two and not posting
access. I doubt that they communicate reading statistics with each
other let alone the rest of usenet.

An article is not an attachment to an article.

"Here is a picture of my coin" with an attached 133K jpg is still only a
one-liner.

My newsreader might check the same article on several different servers,
which might count each as a separate viewer.

Ahhhh, so we are just more verbose. :-)

After more searching today, I find that I am the only source for this
statistic.  (This is almost like being Walter Breen!)  I did not
invent the statistic. I must have gotten it from somewhere.  Where, I
have no clue now.  It is like a note scribbled on the back of an
envelope.   However, we have some evidences that can be assembled, in
addition to the sources cited in this thread so far, such as:
-----------------------

Subject: Posting Statistics (Fred A. Murphy should get out more)
Newsgroups: rec.collecting.coins
View: Complete Thread (14 articles) | Original Format
Date: 2001-03-03 02:46:04 PST

Host: pubnews.netcom.net.uk
Group: rec.collecting.coins
Posts: 4671
Oldest: 10/02/01 16:31:11
Newest: 03/03/01 10:12:38

... etc. ...
101 senders accounting for 3525 posts (75%)
--------------------------------------

Also, it should be possible for someone at the admin level of a feed
or site to tally clicks.  I  mean, you can get this click counter
widget for your own website, so the professionals must have the same
metrics, if not better.  The numbers even might be for sale.  It would
be interesting to pursue from that aspect.

Here's a site of usenet stats that seems at least "reasonable", given
what limited experience I've had with newsgroups:

   http://www.newsadmin.com/spamreports.htm

Scroll down to "Distribution of Article File Size", "Top-100 Newsgroups
by Readership", and "Top-100 Newsgroups by Posting"

No shiatzu. And I'll throw in dinner....

The "Cantankerous Scot" vs "Queen of Priss".

The "Kilt" vs "Panties".

The "Sword" vs "Bent Quill".

Nick could be the round card chick.

I'll call Don King........

Always here for my fellow syngraphist or oenophile.

<big smile> You should have mentioned Nick at the top....reading through an
entire post is too tedious a task for him ;-)
