My understanding is that absinthe is illegal.  Wormwood is used in its
production.  I think it has an anise-like flavor

I personally had never heard of Absinthe (that I remember, although I
don't recall much of my high school or college literature classes), but
did a web search and found this interesting page:

http://www.nepenthes.com/Plants/Artemisia/absinthe.html

Apparently it is illegal most everywhere in the world, and it is pretty
potent stuff that isn't very nice to your brain.

I just picked up on this thread, so excuse me if someone's already given
this information.  You can buy "almost" Absinthe--it's a French liquere
called Pernod.  I believe it's basically the same as Absinthe without the
toxic wormwood which you could probably steep if you insist on ingesting
toxic substances!  Paul  Troy NY

Go to your local food coop Paul, you can buy wormwood in bulk!

***** is toxic.  The trick to ingesting any _intoxicant_ safely is
to not over indulge.  In small amounts the extract of the absinthe
  (wormwood) plant is a hallucinogen.
