Where to buy a 60qt stainless steel stock pot

Post by sgda.. » Sat, 08 Nov 2008 22:14:26

Anyone know where i can get one ? I have been using converted keg as
boil pot and till now this works fine but could be better. The keg has
a covex bottom and is elevated by skirt of keg so the bottom sits hig
from the flame. This takes a bit longer to heat/boil. Also I am now 45
and not getting younger. Although i consider myself a pretty strong
individual still able to rep 315lbs on a free bar bench, i know it is
a matter of time that swinging these heavy kegs around will be more of
a task. I would like to replace my kegs with stainless pots instead.
So help a fellow brewer out if you know where i can get these rather
affordably.
Thanks

Look around your town for a restaurant supply store, and
keep an eye out for businesses (restaurants, dairies, etc.)
folding and auctioning off equipment.

Having the bottom sit a bit above the flame isn't really that bad of a
thing.  You probably would boil faster with the bottom 1 inch above
the flame than having the flame wrap aroun the bottom of the pot.
also, I find the concave bottom much more of a blessing than a curse.
It lets me transfer more of the contents without tipping the pot.

A stainless pot with a 60 qt capacity isn't going to be much lighter
(if any) than a stainless keg of 62 qt (1/2 bbl) capacity.  If you're
going with stainless steel, the only way to make it lighter is to make
it thinner.  The folks making the kegs have done a pretty good job of
making them as light at they can and still be durable.  I'm 50 and I
can still do it.  You still have a few years left.

I like that.  My "brewhouse" is an old "gazebo" in the back yard.  I
just might look into adding a hoist in the roof of the thing.

Thanks,
