barz, as Wolf mentioned, these are made by Ron Urinsco. However, a few
years back Scott Dixon at Vulcan had out a line of 'Hellfire' motors that
were, effectively, the same thing - used Strontium compounds in the mix to
get that red color. There may still be some of those around (I have quite
a few here - including the very first Hellfire L750 ever made by Vulcan).
Some of these are on (or, were on) the TMT AML - noted with the
designation 'HF' in the Short Form list.
The reason Scott discontinued them was, as I remember, some excessive
heat/erosion problems due to the Strontium compounds - and some possible
burnthru right in front of the nozzle - so Scott was under the opinion
that the reliability was just not 'up to snuff'. I've seen one or two do
this - but have also flown many, many of them just fine.
The biggest Hellfire's that Vulcan ever made were two 'O' motors for Tom
Binford's (Statesboro, GA) altitude attempts at Black Rock II (July '90).
And they performed like a jewel. There's nothing like 8 to 10 feet of
red flame to get your heart 'a pumping' <g>.
As I understand, Urinsco has no intentions of submitting his 'red
eye' motors for testing and approval - so the only place you may be able
to see them is at these 'experimental' type launches - or those held by
folks who haven't 'ticked' the TRA 'leadership' (a little sarcastic jab,
there - but basically true) :-)
