MinieMagg - Launch Rod Size?

Post by Mick Spence » Thu, 23 Mar 2000 04:00:00

I just realized that the instructions that came with my MinieMagg kit
don't specify a launch rod size.  The lug looks like 1/2" to me.  Is
that right?  (I don't have a launch rod that big to test it.)  TIA.

Mick,

ID of my mini magg launch lug is 1/2". A 3/8 rod will work fine. 1/2"
will be way too tight
& it might never make it off the rod.

A 1/2" rod works fine if the lugs are correctly aligned and there's no
epoxy in them. ID is about .515"

I've always cut the lug in half and used both on the rocket, one near
the rear and the other about 1/2 way up the body. I always used a true
1/2" (+- .002") rod. I do prefer looser lugs and usually roll my own
from paper box sealing tape on a 9/16" mandril.

Tom,

Have you put a 1/2" rod through it. I did not use a caliper & I used the
6" lug that came with the kit.
I still maintain that 1/2" rod can be trouble. If it***s just a hair
it hangs due to lack of play, side to side.

I've launched my Magg at least 20 times. Used a 1/2" rod every time. No
modification necessary.

John,

I am a little paranoid. I will just run some fine sandpaper through it a
few times, just to give a little more clearance. 8-)

Just drag some sandpaper to the launch. If the rod's too snug for your
comfort, ream it out a bit there. It's a cardboard lug, so it's
dirt-simple to sand.
