An apology and an explanation.....

An apology and an explanation.....

Post by T-Bisho » Sun, 22 Dec 1996 04:00:00

Some time ago I posted a note asking if anyone out there was listening. Now
that I am bit more educated, I feel the need to explain the note and tell
you why I felt the need to say what I said.

At the time I was not getting any responses to my note or so I thought.
With the help of my oldest son, I discovered that my Internet news options
were set up to show me all messages in the newsgroup (limited to 300). I
kept looking for new responses, only to find a few and none of them
applicable to my questions. There was not enough room in my setup to let in
all of the responses out there. I finally figured out that I should set up
to read only new messages. Boy was I surprised at how much talking was
going on and yes people were listening and yes there were responses to my
questions.

Many people gave really good input. Thank you.... It was most helpful...

Some people asked "what is the question?" Perhaps their computer was set up
wrong also. They said they had not seen the question, yet is was there. I
saw it two weeks later myself. I will post it again soon.

Some people suggested I quit whining. I really didn't think I was. I was
just frustrated that I wasn't getting any help and that I had to read
through note after note about what this person said about that person. I
thought this newsgroup was about rocket stuff, not soapboxes. I will now
get down off of mine!

Thanks again for your patience and your constructive comments. Any future
notes from me will be limited our hobby. I apologize for any inconvenience.

One thing to keep in mind is that all of us don't use the same software
to read or post to Usenet (and of course rec.models.rockets).  And then
again some of us don't read the notes in order too (I am one of them).

And it was there.  Had to back track on the index to find it, saw the
original question and I noticed that the questions you were asking
was something I couldn't answer.

One thing I did notice at least in how the notes arrived in Hawaii was
the original question had it's time stamped on one day and the note
with you asking how come no one is answering you time stamped on the
next day.

There are times when you post a note asking a question and will you
get a whole slew of responses and other times none at all.

On my ISP's server, your question arrived *after* your "whine" (as
at least one other person noted).  *Your* server had it (since it
originated from there), but thats not true of everyone else's server.
The way Usenet works, it can take a day or two (or more) for messages
to fully propogate through the system.  While you may get an answer
within 8 hours (I think that was the time difference between your two
posts), plan on at least one to two days for everyone to read and
respond to a message.  Also, some people (such as myself) may only
pick up the messages on my server every few days, so communication is
further delayed.  (BTW, I'll email this to you as well so you can see
if there's a time lag between when it arrives on your news server.)

But, hey, we've all got to start sometime.  Hope you enjoy yourself
and learn something here!
