Mini Marz peeling

Post by Ted Mahle » Thu, 28 Jan 1999 04:00:00

I painted my Mini Marz white last night so I could use the
GREAT Tango Papa decal set. But,,, Using Krylon, the paint
does not stick! It peels right off of the legs. Using my
fingernail I could have the them down to bare plastic
in no time.
I washed the model before I painted it (yes I dried it)
to remove any oil. Is this plastic something different?
Is there a type of paint that will "attack" the surface more
and stick?

I don't know enough about the Marz Lander's materials, but are the
legs plastic (polyethylene)?  If so, you might have to scuff the
plastic up a bit in order for the paint to grab.  I've had this
problem before with poly nosecones.  Scuff them up real well with 325
grit sandpaper, and the paint/primer should adhere just fine!

Hello Ted,

You painted the legs? Hmmm...   Aren't the legs suppose to be red
anyway?  That is except for the shock absorber looking thing and part of
the landing pad which is suppose to be black?  Maybe some silver tossed
in for trim?

I'm looking at my old mars lander and that's what it looks like.  Of
course, I may have not followed the painting instructions that well
either back when I made it 8^)

Regards,
Andy

Estes made the parts all one color, and made pieces in both red and
black.

When assembling them, the black bodies go with the red noses and legs,
and the red bodies go with the black noses and legs.

The kit's available with red or black legs.

I painted mine with shiny black PlastiKote. The paint stuck to the
plastic, but it did not stick to the silk-screened decals. I dunno what
material is silk-screened on there, but it seems to be pretty
paint-resistant. If I had it to do over again, I'd first hit the whole
thing with some fine sandpaper and a coat of primer before painting it.

Did you lightly sand the Marz lander to give the paint something to hold
on to?

To all that ordered or will be ordering my decal sheet for the Marz lander:

I suggest that you sand the entire body of the Lander with a 400 grit sandpaper
before painting it.  This will do two things.  First, it will get rid of the
decals that are on the model and, Two, it will scuff up the surface enough for
the paint to stick.  I always use primer and the krylon white primer is perfect
for this little guy.  You don't even need to paint it !!

Use the white primer, put my decals on it, then hit the model again with a
clear coat.  Nice shiny finish and protects the decals a little.

Oh, if you have a Lander with red legs, don't paint them.  Just protect them
from the white and you are done.  If you have the black legged version, then
you have some tricky sandind to do and some red painting to do.  My suggestion
is to do all the sanding first.  Then cover the Lander as best you can and
paint the legs red  Once that is dry, cover the legs and paint the Lander
white.

Hope that keeps anyone else's paint from peeling.

Take care.
