Estes Raven plans?

Post by Bruce E. Bigelo » Thu, 19 Dec 1996 04:00:00

In my younger days (alas, much too long ago) I remember building a really
odd boost-glider from Estes plans.  I think it was called the Raven.  While
I'm mostly into HPR these days, the raven was really a fun little bird and
I'd like to build another to fly at some NAR launches.  Does anyone know
where I can get a copy of the plans?

TIA,
Bruce

Could you be referring to the Astron Nighthawk?  This was a Lippisch-type
flying wing glider (aerodynamically, like one of the two gliders from an
A.R.V. Condor) with a pop-pod booster, and had small canards on the
booster with adjustable elevators to control arc-over under thrust.

I happen to have the plans for the Nighthawk, including fin patterns, in
my "upcoming projects" box -- I could throw them in a copier and send
them off to you if you'd like.  E-mail me your address if this is what
you're looking for.  B)

Thanks, Silent.  But I don't think that's what I'm looking for.  The raven
was a really strange looking bird.  The vertical stabilizer hung from the
bottom in level flight.  As I recall, the movable control surfaces (to turn
it into a glider) were on the FRONT of the wing, not the back.  and it was
an extremely swept back delta wing configuration.  It was a forward motor
pod design that ejected the motor to release the front control surfaces.
No canards.  And it was certainly one of the Estes plans-only designs, not
a kit.

Estes plan #23. Sort of a delta winged thing with an 18mm motor pod on the
front. You might call or write estes and see if they still have a copy.
