Ugly L1?

Ugly L1?

Post by jethr.. » Fri, 12 May 2000 04:00:00

Howdy all,

I just finished a Rocket R & D semi-scale Army hawk to do my level 1
with this Saturday at Orangeburg.

Is it proper etiquette to certify L1 with an ugly unpainted rocket
that's still in need of some sanding?

Or should I wait a month and pretty it up?

Thanks,

Go ahead and fly it nekkid.  Paint won't make the flight any
better

I had a pretty rocket that lawn-darted and came back to life as an ugly
rocket, and that's what I certified on. There are a couple of photos online
in the April issue of the WOOSH-POP, the WOOSH club's newsletter, available
at

I'll bet your "ugly unpainted rocket that's still in need of some
sanding" isn't as ugly as what I used.

See you there.

As long as it's structurally sound, fly it.

My L1 Certification rocket was flown "***" with no paint or primer.  My L2
rocket was test flown "***" and was painted Fluorescent orange to certify
on.

I flew a rocket that wasn't quite *** as it was wearing a hula skirt.
Well, it was that mylar party waterfall streamer stuff that is 1/2" wide
by 8' long and shimmers and moves.  It was a less than nominal flight
profile 2 out of 3 flights but I think a German magazine published
launch photos of it somewhere.  Looked interesting but did odd things
under boost.

Well, nobody at Fire On The Farm told me it was politically incorrect to
certify L1 with my half-painted Phantom 4000 with wrinkled paint on the
nose cone.  It's been launched once since and STILL hasn't been
painted...

Probably a good thing, really -- it would've gotten really scuffed when
I yanked it out of the tree last Saturday.

Take some magic markers and draw a smiley face on it. Then no one can
say that it's ***.
