MARS light Question: Does anyone know .....

Post by Patrick Allen Quin » Sat, 27 Jan 1996 04:00:00

We all know that the "MARS" light on the front of trains
is a headlight that sweeps back and forth across the track.
I believe the correct acronym is something other than
"MARS" (like MAARS or MARRS). Does someone out there know
what the "correct" acronym is for the "MARS" light and
what does the acronym stand for?

Thanks!

PQ--

MARS is not an acronym -- rather, it is the name of the
company that designed and built the oscillating headlight
of the same name.  I believe that Mars was also the
family name of the owner(s) of the company.

On a different thread, the same is true of the MARS
Candy Co.

Anyone else care to comment, please?

The Mars light used on emergency vehicles sounds like much
the same thing -- an M-pattern oscillating light.
I think the real name is something like the "Model 808 light --
The Light From Mars".

From a previous post (validity unverified):

MARS=Moving Armature Red Signal

MARS lights were first designed and used on firefighting equipment.

You are all wrong if you think it is an acronym.  It is the name of
the man who financed the building of the light.  The same Mars who
made candy bars.

There was an excellent program on the Discovery channel that
documented the first attempts at making an orbiting lamp for the fire
engines.  The program followed the process through till it entered
full production.  I don't recall if Mars actualy posessed the patent
but he did finance the research and design of the working item.  He
did *not* design it, but I forget the name of the designer.
