Q1.  What's with this Athearn Genisis line coming out?  is it an aswer to P2K?
has anyone seen samples of the stuff?  what's the quality and price thing going
into it?

Q2.  Kato's got an ad in MR for new Alco RS-2's & RSC-2's. Waht's the price
gonna be like on those and how much trouble would it be to convert these to
Phase III RS-3's?  (want to do the N&W's Alco.) or should i get

Q3.  Stewart's Phase III RS-3.  what's the quality on that one? they're $40 or
so and already the correct prototype.  would that be a good buy or should i
save myself the heartache?

WTB- if anyone has an old TYCO 2-8-0 or 0-8-0 that they don't want i'm willing
to buy it, if the price is right.  it looks alot like IHC's 2-8-0.  i don't
care about the tender, all i want in good condition is the chassis and the
boiler peices, and the valve gear if possible.

These are unconfirmed rumors, but I hear the "Genisis Line" will have a
'Kato-clone' drive, and PK2 type detailing. Can't say prices, but I imagine
with the two quality components, it will have the price tag to match.

From www.katousa.com

$115 for the RS-2
$140 for the RSC-2

Andrew,

Yes your right, Athearn released last fall HO Amtrak Genisis engines.
But Athearn will also be releasing something in October a NEW series
line of HO engines call 'Genisis'.  They will be of the same quality as
Atlas and KATO and will be in the same price range ($135.00).  Athearn
is trying to use the same promotional gimic as LifeLike did for the
Proto 2000 and Bachmann did for the Spectrum engines.

The Athearn Genesis line is not very firm right now. Delivery is 'fall'
now, although this means that ONE road of one model may be available by
November.  Price has not been determined. Based on all indications,
expect P2K/Kato quality. (I'd guess somewhere in between.) There have
been no reports of samples.

Straight Athearn drive. The shell is pretty good, but it is a 'flat' kit.
Don't know if that bothers you. They are getting harder to find, as it
has been many years since they have been made.

The list price for the Athearn "Genisis Line" engines is $135.00.

You might want to hold out for the Altas re-release of the RS-3.  It should
be out in the next year or so, if you can wait that long.

Check out the Athearn website (www.athearn.com) for photos of the deck,
engineer's side front steps, and sidesill of the SD70/75 (pretty much all
that's been completed, according to the site).  The deck has treadplates.  I
think the steps have holes in them.  So far, so good.

Will the new engines be DCC ready like the Kato and Atlas?

According to the horse's mouth (www.athearn.com) the answer is YES.

I think the conversion of an RS2 to RS3 would be a bit
tough.  First there is the repair of the sides of the cab.
Next you would have to add battery boxes to the walkways and
then add fuel tanks and air tanks to the underside.
A Atlas RS3 would be easier and run like a top.  Let me know
I have several on the shelves for sale.

Not only this, but the short hood of the RS-2 is narrower and the fuel
fillers and windows vary.  It would be hard to be worried about phases
when so much would be wrong.  I thought about going from an Atlas or MDC
RS-3 to and RS-2 and there would have been too much work or compromise to
make me happy even with the conversion kits available.  Now I'm glad I
waited!  Thanks, KATO.

FYI before you go buying an Atlas RS-3, you may want to compare it to the
MDC with new drive.  Both are good runners, but there are differences in
louvers, exhaust stacks, and other details which may make your modeling
easier if you choose one over the other.  I've got at least one of both
and can't be happier with the way each runs, so the details may help you.
