Looking for Race Set Information

Hi, I want to buy my son a race set for Christmas.

Can anyone tell me some useful buying criteria ...  like:
good/quality brand names,
are wireless remotes worth it,
the loops look cool but do the  cars fall off all the time,
tracks with lots of bends/turns .. again look fun, but do the cars fall off,
do you want long straights so you can run the cars as fast as they go,
any other criteria/questions I didn't ask?

I was looking in the JC Penny 98 Christmas catalog (page 584) Race Set with
62 feet of track with 2 loops, high speed turns, no wireless remotes, 4 cars
for around $90.  Is this sound like a good price.  Looks like a lot of fun
.. but I am concerned about some of my questions above.    Thanks in Advance
... Merry Christmas/Happy New Year!

Hopefully, if the cars are brass, they won't fall off the track, that
could get rather expensive, rather quickly!

I agree, a helix (sort of a loop) does "look cool," but takes lots of
room for the type of rollingstock you are planning to run...

Kato or Atlas would be my choice here. The last time I checked, Jacque
Penroy (Pen-wah) had a pretty good assortment to choose from.

By the way, is the track code 55 or code 70?

Oops, forgot the most important question, which may negate all my
helpful comments: What scale is it? Sorry folks, I only forgot the most
important question of all... DOH!

Last question: How fast can it go? :>))
