N Scale: Life Like E8

N Scale: Life Like E8

After having read several glowing reports about the new
Life Like E8s, I broke down and bought one.  As soon as
I picked it up I knew it was different from the Atlas/
Kato E8 I already have, it is somewhat heavyer, which
usually means it has more tractive effort.  The detail
seems quite good (though I am no judge of authenticity),
and the colors (mine is a Sante Fe warbonnet) are very
good.  The engine has all wheel pickup, and the front and
rear axles of each truck are geared, leaving the center
axles as idlers.  The motor is has with a nice size
flywheel for smooth starts and stops, and the mechanism is
reasonably quite (very quite compared to ConCor, louder
than a Kato/Atlas).  It runs very well, has decent speed
which is likely greater than scale, handles #4 cross overs
at speed with no trouble and in general seems a great value.
The only flaws so far are that the unit does not have
a constant lighting circuit (which is absurd), and the front
coupler is a dummy knucle coupler which does not appear to
be readily replaceable.  However, for $39.00 (hobby shop
price), if that's all that is wrong, you can expect to see
more of these on my layout soon.
