Any body know a good book for beginers.

If you are planning on using the typical train set "snap track" you
might just check out the Atlas website for some simple 4x6 plans.  Their
URL is
http://www.atlasrr.com/products/fanlayout/hoflintro.html which will
bring you right to the trackplan section.

In 4x6 you won't be able to do more than an oval with some spurs but
if you look around the Atlas site you will see some ideas for expanding
it into a larger layout at some later time.  Enjoy your first layout and
I hope it will lead to a lifetime hobby for you.

Any good hobby shop carries Kalambach books. They have one "101 layouts" for
all size layouts.

One place to look for layout info is in model railroading magazines. Back
issues are available at some libraries (check them for layout/railroad
books--they usually have the most popular Kalmbach books) and hobby shops, or
directly from the publishers. A great starting point to search for
layout-related articles is Jeff Scherb's excellent Train Magazine Index:

http://www.accurail.com/tm.htm

Select "For trackplan" from the menu at the left and then enter the
dimensions. There are at least 50 layouts listed when I tried 6x4.  One
interesting one was this in a recent Model Railroader:

The HO scale Turtle Creek Southern
Model Railroader, June 1998 page 84
        ( "NELSON, RICHARD A.",   TRACKPLAN, HO )
        Trackplan is 4x5
        - Modular - standard joints
        - Multi-level
        - Standard gauge
        - Continuous operation

Best of luck (and welcome!)
JM
