Life-Like E8 N-Scale

Post by DLat » Wed, 28 Jun 1995 04:00:00

I just got my two Life-Like N-Scale Burlington (CB&Q) E8s.  They run like
a dream - much much better than my Con-Cor and almost as good as my custom
painted Kate (at third of the price).  Now, can someone suggest a way to
change the front dummy couplers so that I can double head them?  Any
coupler (MT, Kato, Unimate, etc.) would be fine (except, of course
Rapidos).  The dummies they come with would be fine except they don't seem
to move from side to side at all.

I read somewhere that MicroTrains is working on a coupler conversion,
and you are not alone wondering how to mount a coupler on the front.

Am I the only one that thinks the nose on these things looks like a
cross with a Baldwin Babyface? I keep seeing reviews, and hear
modellers in shops, saying they look fine. But they look wierd to me
while still in the box, and even wierder nose to nose with about any E
or F worth having.

First Lifelike does their bulgy F's with the cranked number boards,
then this mutant E, then they really add insult to injury by doing
(with BevBel's help) roadname after roadname I want.

Sheesh.

I just picked up my E-8's also.  When I ordered them, I had my dealer
check to see if there was a conversion from M/T available for them.
I just received two M/T conversion sets.  One set is to replace the
Rapido type coupler in the rear, and the other is to replace the dummy
coupler in the front.  I have not done the conversion yet, but it appears
that the front unit will fit in place of the dummy coupler.  You may have
to drill and tap a hole to mounth the new assembly.  the converson sets that
I received are 1021-1022 Low and Short profile body ount conversion kit,
which is for the front, and 1128 MT-7 couplers with adapters which are
for the rear trucks.   Hope this helps.

I hope I don't rain on anyones parade... but does anyone else out there
notice a "problem" with the length and shape of the LL E8 nose?  At the
last club meeting we got out a book the contained pictures of the BN
commuter Es and found a pictured E that was the same size as the LL E to
compare.  The LL E8 nose looks to me to be too long, not flat on top [the
headlight casing extends much to far back, above the top of the nose],
and the vertical front of the nose is angled more like an E6 than an E8
and is also pointed rather than rounded when viewed looking down.

The best description I have come up with is that the nose looks like a
cross between a DL-109 and an E6.

I really wish I had not noticed this, as I really, really like the
excellent paint job on the CB&Q units.  And I will probably buy a
couple anyway and just forget about the nose.

Hmm... 1021 is an old switcher conversion kit.  I think that
1128 is the standard Con-Cor coupler pocket conversion,
which I have heard doesn't quite fit.

Was this MT's recommendation?  Please let us know how this
works out!
