Futaba - Indy car sponsor?

Post by Peter You » Thu, 02 May 1996 04:00:00

Tonight the local TV station in Albuquerque had a feature story on the
Inday car preparations of the Galles team - sponsor of Al Unser Jr. I
couldn't help but notice that Futaba was prominently displayed in the
workshop as well as on the vehicle(s).  Does anyone know if this is the
R/C model aviation of Futaba that we know, or their industrial
electronics division, or ??

Al Unser Jr. is with Penske, not Galles.

Futaba makes RC car radios and speed controllers as well as aircraft
equipment--so it probably is the same Futaba. I recall Team Losi (RC car
accessories) was a major sponsor of one of the IndyCar teams a few years
back.

Pete, Futaba manufactures almost all Delco's LED-LCD readouts in their
other manufacturing divisions and Futaba(same co that makes radio's)
joined in the sponsorship deal. They were on the car last year but in
a smaller fashion. Unser jr. is not the driver for the "futaba"car
though.                     James T. Little

Ah - Unser Jr. hasn't raced for Galles since 1993.  Hew switched to
Penske in 1994.

I have some contacts at Futaba corp. of America.  I'll have to see if
anyone there knows.

Team Losi featured an Indy car in their booth at the RCHTA show in Chicago
last October.  Come to think of it, so did Futaba, I believe!  So much to see,
such a poor memory . . . (heavy sigh)

Since the cars have on-board cameras, and those are remotely aimed,
could it be that Futaba R/C parts are on board?
It would only take a receiver and single servo to "aim" the camera for
the TV shots.

A friend of mine used to work for Futaba.  He designed a lot of the
electronics that went into their Digital Dashboard division.  They
apparently make (made) all of the digital dashboards for cars made in the
late 80's.  They are the same company as we know, different division.
