Advice:use NIMH pak or NICAD?

I ordered a  complete RTF trainer  (looks like a J-3 cub)  from Hobby Lobby,
but  I didn't order the nicad batteries and charger as I see that there are
NIMH batteries available from Hobby Lobby and other sources that are lighter.
Just how much lighter I don't know, but every ounce should help a lot.  What is
recommended for the kit is 8.4 volt 7-cell nicad,  and it has a 600 size motor
and will come with the microcontroller/low voltage cutoff.  Is there a problem
with using an 8.4 v NIMH battery pak instead?  What are
advantages/disadvantages of NIMH over nicad?
Also, how do charge times compare, and do I need a special NIMH peak charger,
or can the same nicad types be used?  Thanks!
