Corks and storage

While waiting for my kit wines to ferment and age,
I purchased some inexpensive - relatively speaking -
cases of wine from Michigan wineries - namely Tabor
Hill and St. Julian - and I noticed that they always
stored the bottles cork down. I tried this on my third
batch after the first two batches leaked and grew mold
on the corks while laying at the standard angle. After
the standard 2 hr sulfite soak and 1 week upright to
dry, I flipped the entire batch cork down and NO LEAKS
in six weeks! Also, the bottom of the cork - wine side -
turns deep purple faster - did I mention it's a cabernet?
- just like the big boys! I messed around with waxing
the tops of the bottles, but chunks of wax always end up
in the bottle/glass. Of course, standard disclaimers apply:
This worked for me, and, your mileage may vary.
