Well, France & Italy have had some success with this idea ;o) But
seriously...I took particular notice of the fact that you've listed
Zinfandel and Cranberry in your inventory. This is because a
Zin/Cranberry blend took best of show at the Lonestar Amateur Winemaking
competition last October at the Texas State Fair, so it seems to be a
worthy candidate for a blending experiment. I don't know what the
proportions were, but trying different amounts a glass at a time is
simple enought. As to Cabernet S. and Merlot, that's one of the basic
Bordeaux blends (along with Cabernet Franc and a couple of other
varieties). The usual goal of blending (ignoring the economic one of
stretching premium varietals by blending with cheaper ones) is to fill
in the "holes" in a particular varietal's character and add complexity
by using one or more different varieties who's characteristics will
"compliment" the base. But hey, I say try every combination you can and
see what works...and by all means, let us know how it turns out!
