Can I use Grocery Store Juice?

Post by Morriso » Fri, 01 Nov 2002 22:24:19

Hello Everyone:

Well, I am just starting out in this hobby, and am trying a few new
things...  I have two batches of wine on the go now (one from a kit, and one
using juice from a wine store).  My next trial (or at least I would like to
try) making apple wine, but, no one seems to sell the apple juice in their
wine shops.

Is it possible to use regular apple juice from the grocery store? (i.e.
mcains, or any of those carton type brands)?  Also, if this is possible, I
wanted to try a small batch (just to start off with)...  Could that be done
in a small jug (i.e. a 5 litter jug)? - what I mean is, can I still dump a
whole package of yeast, clarifiers, etc  in the small jugs? or would that
ruin them?

It's possible, but you should look to your local health food store for
unfiltered, no additive, apple juice. Many grocery stores carry at least one
such apple juice, usually in the refrigerator section.

Morrison, If you have an Apple Orchard nearby, then give them a try and see
if you can get Unpasteurized juice that is not sorbated. As with any
chemical addition you should not just blindly add amounts, but rather they
should match the volume you are making. For my apple wine the only 3
chemicals that I "routinely" add are Pectin enzyme, Acid blend, and
sulfites. The whole yeast packet is not a problem in a smaller batch. Also
it is a good idea to add sugar to get your *** level up to a reasonable
level. HTH

I considered the local Health Food store for honey and apple juice,
et. al.  What a rip off.  The same protein bars my wife buys in
grocery store were double price in health food store.  Same pasta from
grocery was almost triple, juice was just as ridiculous.  I thought it
would be a good source for certain items, but it seems to be a place
to get some unique items, but most stuff in stock was same as in a
large grocery store, but at a much higher price.

I'm glad more people are realizing what a rip-off these places are.

I think you will find "The Joy of Home Winemaking" by Terry Garey
very helpful.  It tells you how to make apple wine from frozen
concentrated juice, as well as from unconcentrated juice.

Don't know if you are in Canada or the US, but up here in the Great
White North (!!!!!!) I have made terrific apple wine using McCain's
brand apple juice and generic  lemonaide from frozen concentrate,
purchased at the local grocery store. Total cost for a 23 liter carboy
was less than $20 (Canadian). and it was great after being sweetened
and filtered before bottling. I have another batch ont he go right
now! email for the recipe if you like.

Living down here in Coastal Texas, we are a loooong way from the nearest
apple orchard.  I am envious each year when the apples come in and the talk
turns to them.  Really sad

Cant you get fresh unpasturized apple juice at the grocery store?
Living in IL like I do its probably cheaper, but I doubt it would be
more than $8-$10 a gallon of fresh juice.  Kindof expensive sure,
but its worth it to make yourself a 1 gallon batch of cider or cyser.
Not enough to bottle and age, but enough to make
yourself happy!
