Sediment in Wine after bottling

Sediment in Wine after bottling

Post by Doug Cannin » Sun, 04 Nov 2001 12:34:11

I seem to be having trouble with my bottled wines gathering a
sediment. This is after using geletin or benenite to settle the wine
and racking several times. I now even filter my wines but they seem to
develop a sediment after being bottled for a while.

Does any one have any suggestions?

It sounds as though you are bottling before fermentation is complete.

Doug,
after fining, you may need to rack off sediments more than once. If you
are bottling right off of the bentonite lees, then that's part of your
problem. Don't do that. Rack off of bentonite lees, wait 4 to 6 weeks and
then rack again. Then bottle.

I think we would need a little more information about how this wine
was made before commenting. The sediment could be caused by numerous
things.

I know this goes against the opinion of most wine makers but sediment
in the bottle is not a flaw. Some of the greatest wines in the world
throw a sediment over time. If the sediment occurs after a short time
in bottle it may be evidence of another problem which may be a flaw.
