Piccolo collective pitch upgrade questions

Post by turbina.. » Sun, 30 Dec 2001 04:55:14

Hello,
I'm just in the process of setting my Piccolo collective pitch heli and have
a couple of questions:

1)    Any (setup) instructions in English ?
The original instructions are in German and have nothing on actual
setup,only mechanical assembly.

2)    Anti rotation link (stirrup shaped thingy)
This seems to pull the swash plate out of concentricity with the main shaft,
resulting in head vibration at > 50% throttle.  Since the shaft OD is much
less than the swashplate hole ID, how can this be corrected ?
Sleeving the main shaft?

3)    Does the anti-rotation stirrup connect to the short or long ball link
on the swash plate ?

4)    Collective servo set up
With the collective servo output arm horizontal (half throttle), should I
set up anti-rotation link bend at 90 degrees ? (May have to raise/lower
aileron and elevator servos to get correct height).  What should the main
blade pitch be at this point, 0 degrees (I don't expect to 3D !!) or just
enough to hover ?

Thanks,
Regards,
Jules.

P.S. I posted this on the Ikarus BBS but nothing appeared.

I do not think there are English directions yet.  But the setup is
pretty straighforward if you know anything about helis.  If not, ask
away!

The main shaft is sized smaller so that the swash can tilt when you
apply cyclic.  If you are having head vibration issues, I do not think
it is your anti-rotation link.  While it may pull the swash off
center, that should not contribute much vibration.

I had some serious vibration issues which were caused by a warped
head.  One arm drooped, and one arm was warped inwards slightly.  I
straightened it as best I could using a heat gun, some cloth
shielding, and a large dose of caution.  It now runs much smoother.  I
think it is also a good idea to fold the baldes and use a blade holder
when not in use, especially if you have straightened the head.... it
may take a set over time.

I believe the flybar links connect tot he long arms and the
anti-rotation link connects to the short.  Be SURE to put the
anti-rotation link on the cut away side of the pitch slider.  If it is
on the non-cut away side, it will hit the bottom of the pitch arm
mount at negative collective settings.

I have mine set up with zero pitch at center stick and horizontal
servo arm.  But this is not the conventional setup since it gives me
symetrical positive and negative pitch.

You will probably need all the positive pitch you can get and may even
need to use 5 or 5.5 mm for the 4.5 mm dimension on the pitch arms.
So I would recommend setting things up so that the pitch slider
contacts the hub when the servo arm is in the 45 degree up position
and use that as a starting point.
