I spent several hours watching a Sikorsky S-61 lifting cement up a
mountain to build ground anchors for a new ski lift. The full bucket
weighed about two tons. It was really entertaining, especially when the
pilot did a nose over after dropping the load at the top and came racing
back down the hill to the loading zone. Then he made a sharp turn at the
bottom and the emty cement bucket would swing out on it's 100-ft cable
to almost 45-degrees.
I found out about this project by contacting the heli' company at their
website. They kept me informed on where the crew would be working. One
of the sites happened to be close to me.
I got some nice pictures. Also got to talk to the crew during a break. I
intend to go back in two weeks to watch them lift the towers up the
mountain. I'll take a camcorder for some video.
I recommend that you try to find a helicopter lift company in your area
to see if you can observe them at a work site. Really neat stuff!
