78 RPM Record Playr needed

Post by John Bak » Wed, 19 Feb 1997 04:00:00

I am looking for a good quality 78 RPM record player, with a light tone arm and
the ability to hitch up to a 1990s sound system (this means that the system
needs a compatible output voltage and power). We have come upon a hoard of old
records (mostly classical and some home recordings by grandparents) that we want
to get on tape.

Anyone who has such a 78 rpm record player in good condition (with a needle that
isn't dull and preferably is diamond in good condition), please drop me an e
mail.

Thanks

John Baker

John,

In the past, I've have very good luck at thrift stores and
garage/estate sales.  But the tsunami of nice old Garrards and Duals
has abated in the last year or two.  Now I see mostly utter ***
offered.

As you're shopping, don't worry as much about the condition of the
stylus as you do about the brand of the cartridge.  If you find a nice
changer with a Shure or Pickering cartridge in it, you should easily
be able to obtain a 78 rpm stylus to slip in...at relatively moderate
cost.

Good luck!

Tom
