A'm I out of line on shipping costs?

Gents/Ladies,

I have for auction eBay item 6590952746 ( I'm not promoting this here).  I
have been questioned on the shipping costs.

Before I explain the whys and wherefores please look over the listing, try
the shipping calculator, read my replies to questions asked and comment back
here if you think I screwed something up or not..

As to not to color your replies, I will reserve my current feelings and
comments until I hear back from you.

I am not a "Power Seller" by any means.  So I have little experience
shipping these vintage and lovingly restored radios.  I appreciate your
comments.

Thanks,

Paul

I did not look...but S&H which is $5 or maybe even $10
above your actual shipping cost *could* be considered acceptable.
The real kickers are the sellers who put down S&H two -three  times their
actual cost.
No one but a fool would bid on such items.

$67 from PA to IL is way out of line.  The actual shipping via UPS ground is
under $20. (at 30 lbs in a 20x20x20 box)

I also think your BIN price is out of line for that radio.  I typically see
those and sell them for under $100.  But you have to set your price at what
you feel comfortable.

But don't try to quadruple the shipping costs to make more money.

I think your problem lies here:  "new materials, shipped and packed at the UPS
store".  Using the UPS store to do your packing will greatly increase costs to the
buyer, and limit your bidders.  Is there any reason why you are not packing the
radios yourself?

Since I'm now the resident kvetcherer on shipping fees, I'll add my
comments. If I used Fedex Ground and charged $7.00 for packing material
(not really enough if you are dbl boxing), it could be shipped from CO
to you for about $35-40 total, insured. Your calculator gives me UPS
Ground $80.84 (zip 80013). You advised one person to subtract $40 from
the calculated cost and that would be closer...and it is closer to what
I would calculate with Fedex...EXCEPT that you say the calculated cost
-40 is before packing costs...how much are your packing costs? the
other problem being that the calculated cost is a shocker. Please don't
take my comments as negative. I know you want to be fair and still make
a buck.

$67 via UPS Ground to Wisconsin. $94 via parcel post.

That's heading into "that's insane" high.

I think its way out of line.  Shows $132 via Parcel Post to my location.
I know it can go Priority for $50-60.  PP would be about $40.  Another
$10 or so for packing wouldn't be out of line.

In all honesty, your shipping charges are way out of line.

Shipping charges are coming up $73 UPS Ground from PA to MO. If I consider
the total package weighing 30 lbs including box and packing and possible
oversize charges, based upon my past shipments of that nature I could easily
ship that package from my location in MO to you in PA for $20 or a little
less via Fed-Ex Ground or UPS Ground. I always charge actual shipping cost
and no more.

The main problem is you're trying to justify packing charges by The UPS
Store. Don't be fooled thinking they'd do a better job than you. Good boxes
are free if you know where to look. Packing paper works just as good as foam
peanuts, if not better, when properly used. I've never even considered
passing on packing or handling charges to buyers... it's just a matter of
doing good business. Spend a half an hour packing your own radio, do it
right, and pass on the savings to your buyer. You'll get higher final
auction values if you do.

Art,

I think a lot of people are seeing this radio as you are. Compared to other
non-restored radios on eBay.  (I think that is how your are comparing the
BIN price. Right?).  I purchased this one unrestored and non functional for
about 50 bucks plus shipping (wish I kept the box and cost sticker now).

There is no profit only expense in the shipping cost.  That is shipping and
new materials only.

Still it looks like I MUST find a cheaper way of packing and shipping.

Thanks Art,
Paul.

I had UPS do the Transoceanic that shipped to WA state.  I wanted to see if
they did any better than I.  Also there would be no excuses if an insurance
claim was needed.

The TO (eBay # 6588527340) to WA state costs: 18x12x12 box 10.66, service to
pack that box is 2.66, second outer box 20x20x20 is 12.54 plus 3.13 service
and ground shipping at 39.47.  The estimator was a bit higher than that to
99336.

I think that I will stop at Office Max and price packing materials and FedEx
for pricing.

Thank Jim,
Paul.

Is that USPS priority?  I will look into this.  I gotta do something about
this cost.

Please, how would you go about that for about $20?

Does UPS store up-charge the actual shipping cost for profit?  Should I call
UPS or Fed Ex to pick it up at my home?

Thanks Steve,
Paul.

Randy,

Thanks for bringing that up.  I put a lot of TLC time and materials into the
restoration of this radio.  I hope the market can bear the cost of the
restoration ( the shipping is too high even for my tastes)  or I will have
to start looking for another method of supporting my hobby habits.

A reserve is necessary to get out of the radio the effort and costs that
went into it.  It is fully restored and it works too :~)

Thanks again,
Paul.
